North Branch Nature Center

The North Branch Nature Center in Montpelier, VT hired HELM as its Owner's Representative for a three phase, multi-year renovation and expansion project including renovation of an old barn into a preschool space, addition of 1700 sf multipurpose classroom, and deep energy retrofit of a historic farmhouse. With the addition of a 15-kW solar array, the whole campus is now Net Zero. This project scope included Act 250 permitting coordination, grant writing, contractor selection, and budget management. Winner of the 2019 Vermont Green Building Network’s Going Greener and People’s Choice Awards.

The non-profit Center for an Agricultural Economy in Hardwick, VT has been working for the past 10 years to develop a plan for the 15-acre Atkins Field as a community events center. HELM was hired as the owner's Project Manager to coordinate the Act 250 and local permitting process, develop designs for fundraising and grant writing, coordinate contractor selection. With funding from the State of VT and USDA Rural Development, this project includes extensive grant submittals and documentation. The first phase of the project included a timber framed community pavilion.

Greenfield High Performance Home - Robert Swinburne Architect - Vermont Natural Homes

Greenfield high performance home

For this small high performance home in Greenfield, MA HELM worked alongside Vermont Natural Homes to support the pre-construction process; providing cost planning and scheduling services and acted as project manager through the construction phase. This project was MA Tier III, achieving exemplary energy performance (an airtightness level of .066) and highlighting local materials including Ashfield stone and slate, cherry and maple.

Deep Energy Retrofit - Robert Swinburne Architect - Webster Construction


This project converted an 1800s historic timberframe into a high performance home in southern Vermont. HELM provided project management services to the builder. This project won Efficiency Vermont’s 2019 Innovation Award for Residential New Construction.

Hermit Thrush Brewery - Brattleboro, VT - Chris Adams AIA - Mathes Hulme Builders

The Hermit Thrush Brewery in Brattleboro, VT expanded its tasting room downtown and added a new canning and storage facility in Dummerston. HELM provided construction management services, and coordinated the permitting process and renovations to both spaces.
